With 1991’s ROTE OHREN FETZEN DURCH ASCHE, the directorial trio of Ursula Pürrer, Dietmar Schipek and Ashley Hans Scheirl created one of the most important Austrian avantgarde films and depicted a life feeling and political stance which go hand in hand with concepts still on everyone’s lips today: diversity, gender fluidity and self-empowerment in love and life, beyond any normative attributions. In a urban desert left to decay, the inhabitants follow their obsessions with an anarchistic bent. The restoration and digitization of this queer underground film classic between science fiction and dreamlike apocalyptic vision was carried out by the Kinothek Asta Nielsen e.V. in 2020. (ara)
